Today, the restaurant ranking organization behind the World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced its list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. This year, Odette restaurant in Singapore takes the No. 1 spot.
Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is one of two region-specific lists from the World’s 50 Best Restaurants team. Because that list heavily favors fine dining European restaurants and cuisines, the World’s 50 Best organization highlights other kinds of food, if not other dining styles, with Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. Gaggan, which has held the No. 1 spot in Asia since 2015, is No. 2 on the list this year; it’s No. 5 on the 2018 World’s 50 Best restaurants list. (Odette was No. 28 on the World’s 50 Best last year.)
Odette and the other restaurants at the top of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants will likely have more opportunity to inch up in the rankings on the World’s 50 Best list. In January, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced that starting with its 2019 list, no restaurant previously named best in the world would be eligible for the list going forward. That eligibility change does not apply to Asia’s 50 Best; Gaggan can potentially reclaim the top spot before the restaurant closes in 2020.
The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony in Macao also honored this year’s winner of the always-controversial Asia’s Best Female Chef, Garima Arora, the executive chef of Bangkok restaurant Gaa. Gaa is No. 16 on the list of Asia’s 50 Best restaurants this year.
