Induction burners have risen in popularity in recent years as an alternative to gas or electric stovetops — but does the average home cook really need to drop some major coin on one? Today in a special episode of You Can Do This, host Clifford Endo is joined by Museum of Food and Drink founder, cocktail genius, and all-around gadget guru Dave Arnold to test out the Breville Polyscience Control Freak, an induction burner that allows for obsessive temperature control.
As Arnold explains, home cooks may decide to switch over to induction burners for a few reasons: They heat up much more quickly than electric stovetops, and because induction heats the pan directly, it doesn’t give off much extra heat (meaning it won’t heat up an already-warm apartment in the summer).
But this particular gadget retails for a hefty $1,799 — can it be worth ten times as much as the cheapest induction burners currently on the market?
