Plenty of restaurants have unassuming digs, but a BP gas station in Michigan isn’t exactly the place you’d think of for good food. In this episode of Cooking in America, host Sheldon Simeon drops by Taystee’s Burgers in Dearborn, where Ali Jawad and his co-owner Mo Nassereddine are serving halal versions of classic American food.
Taystee’s started as a two-man show, as a way for Jawad and Nassereddine to serve the predominantly Muslim community in Dearborn (and also as a way for them and their families to enjoy a classic bacon cheeseburger). Jawad and Nassereddine — both first-generation Americans; their families moved to Michigan from Lebanon — credit the strong work ethic of their parents as the inspiration.
