Watch: An Authentic, Homestyle Indonesian Spread in South Philly

‘Dining on a Dime’ heads to Hardena Waroeng for satay

For its 12th season, Dining on a Dime heads to beautiful Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where host Lucas Peterson tours through the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. His first stop is Hardena Waroeng in the heart of South Philly, where this casual, cafeteria-style Indonesian restaurant is cooking up favorites of the Southeast Asian archipelago like rendang and satay.

We’ve covered Malaysian and Malay-Indonesian hybrid restaurants in the past on Dining on a Dime, but never a place that is fully dedicated to the cuisine of Indonesia — the country with the world’s largest Muslim population. Intense flavors characterize Indonesian food, and you’ll easily find strong sweet and salty flavor combinations, as well as sambal — a ground chile and shrimp paste spread or sauce. People travel from all over to get their hands on Hardena’s satay, and Peterson might just become one of them.
