Mikropolis, Copenhagen, Denmark [Photo: Official Site]

Today, Eater returns to Copenhagen, Denmark to focus on 11 exciting restaurants and bars that have opened in the past 12 months and are heating up the city's dining scene. This comes about six months after the last Copenhagen heatmap. As was the case last time around, photographer and founder of the Kopenhagen Collective (a Copenhagen-based creative collective) Rasmus Malmstroem shares his picks for the hottest drinking and dining Copenhagen has to offer.

Among the map's offerings are a newcomer offering gourmet hot dogs (Foderbrættet), a spot for barbecue in the basement of another restaurant (Barbie), and a South American-inspired restaurant with a pretty insane tiled design (Llama). Claus Meyer's trio of restaurants at The Standard are still eligible for this map, including one with a brand new Michelin star (Studio). Finally, Copenhagen's boozers and beer drinkers also have their own new hotspot combining the best of both worlds (Mikropolis). And, here now, the Eater Heatmap to Copenhagen:

Tried any of the places on the list or feel there are any glaring omissions? You know what to do.

Foderbrættet

Recently, a lot of cafes and restaurants have taken up the challenge of renewing the old famous hot dog. The Danes love them and so do many visitors and tourists. If you love hot dogs, you should definitely try Foderbrættet's interpretation of a gourmet hot dog.

From the outside, Osteria 16 seems like a small hole in the wall. But inside the rustic restaurant you can enjoy small antipastis with friends. Occasionally the Pakistani dishwasher will throw one of his signature curries on the menu.

By opening Gustu in Bolivia back in 2012, Claus Meyer (owner of Meyers, The Standard, and one of the founders of Noma) introduced the South American kitchen into the consciousness of the Danish people. Now the founders of Cofoco have opened Llama in Copenhagen, serving specialities from Lima, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Mexico.

Home to a part of Copenhagen's creative elite, Papirøen (Paper Island) has become an interesting visit just near Christiania. Copenhagen Street Market serves the small island with food, drinks, and coffee from trucks and trailers. Food offerings vary and include fried chicken, tacos, Cuban street food, and more. Visit by boat, bike or walk from Christianshavn. Closed on Mondays and Thursdays.

Grill Royal Kongens Nytorv

Anders Aagaard, founder of Madklubben, opened the new concept restaurant Grill Royal with reasonable prices and a prime location on Kongens Nytorv in the very center of Copenhagen. Three main dishes on the menu are bœuf, moules, or a burger, while there's also a simple wine menu and a vinaigrette salad as a starter. Finish off with cheese or a dessert. It's nothing fancy, just a proper tasting meal.

Well-hidden in the basement of the restaurant Retour Steak Vesterbro lies another restaurant — Barbie, short for barbecue, which is what you get. This meat is cooked on a pit smoker and is so tender you don't need a knife. Expect to be seated on long tables together with other guests.

Mikropolis is a cozy cocktail bar with 10 beer taps and a bold bottle list. Mikkeller, To Øl, and two of Copenhagen's finest cocktail specialists have teamed up with the one goal of bringing beer freaks and booze heads together, and avoiding the cab ride between your IPAs and Negronis.

The old antique shop on Gothersgade now also houses a café. The old charming building with the large windows overlooking the busy Gothersgade has quickly become a favorite by many locals. Coffee, wine and lunch is served surrounded by old French and Scandinavian antiques.
