A group of self-described "soju addicts" have filed suit against two of Korea's largest producers of the distilled beverage, arguing that "we have become alcoholics because they failed to warn the dangers of alcohol." According to the Korea Observer, 26 plaintiffs filed suit in the Seoul Central District Court, seeking 2.1 billion won (or $2.06 million) in damages from soju-makers Hite Jinro and Muhak. Several government institutions, including the National Health Insurance Service, are also named in the suit, for mandating health-warning labels that are "too small to read."
This isn't the first lawsuit soju-makers have faced in Korea: In 2005, drinkers filed a similar suit against Jinro soju and the national government, arguing the latter does not do enough to curb the country's infamous drinking culture.
