Just how often do Americans really eat pizza? According to the government's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey "What We Eat in America," the answer is pretty much all the time. Looking at data from 2007 - 2010, the study concludes that a whopping 1 in 8 Americans "consumed pizza on any given day," and the rate shoots to 1 in 4 when looking at American males aged 6-19. The age group least likely to consume pizza is the over-60 set, and across all age groups men are more likely than women to have consumed pizza on a given day.
There are some interesting differences between how adults and children consume pizza. Whereas dinner time is when the majority of adults consume their pizza, children consume pizza at lunch and dinner at relatively similar rates. The study also examined the "differences by race/ethnicity in pizza consumption," and found that white Americans eat more pizza than other groups, while amongst children there is no difference in consumption by race. For those who ate pizza, the meal likely accounted for about one-fourth of their daily energy intake and one-third of their daily sodium intake. Check out the report and its nifty graphs below:
