Chefs David Chang (Momofuku), Alex Atala (D.O.M.), and René Redzepi (Noma) are on the cover of the Nov. 18 issue of Time Magazine in Europe, Africa, Asia, and basically everywhere but the U.S. Incidentally, the U.S. cover focuses on NJ governor Chris Christie and is actually titled "The Elephant in the Room." Fun.
The issue is titled: "The Gods of Food: Meet the People Who Influence What (and How) You Eat." It focuses on "influencers" in food, including the cover chefs, Blue Hill chef Dan Barber, food writer and Cook It Raw creative director Andrea Petrini, food scold Michael Pollan, famous Spanish chef Albert Adrià, and chef/cookbook phenom Yotam Ottolenghi. Based on the online table of contents (subs. required), it seems the only woman profiled as an influencer is Aida Batlle, a fifth generation coffee producer in El Salvador who has worked with respected American coffee retailers like Stumptown and Blue Bottle. The magazine's list of the 13 Gods of Food highlights no female chefs, though it does mention four women connected to the global food world: Aida Batlle (coffee producer); Amrita Patel (Chairman of India's National Dairy Development Board); Vandana Shiva (environmental activist and author); and Ertharin Cousin (head of the U.N. World Food Programme).
There is an article about Chang, Atala, and Redzepi titled "The Dudes of Food," which explores these three chefs' relationship to the MAD Symposium and how they are "close buds, despite the vast distances that separate their restaurants." These three chefs aren't strangers to Time Magazine. Each of the three has been included on the Time 100 List, and Redzepi appeared on an international cover in 2012. Subscribers can check out the issue here. See below for a glimpse of what the Nov. 18 issue of Time looks like in the U.S. and everywhere else in the world:
According to issue editor Howard Chua-Eoan, the chef-focused content will be "Available inside the US edition but INT and iPad readers get the bonus of a family tree (or forest) of chefs." That food family tree, online here, seems to not have any women at all:
