You’ve probably spent the past several months mostly indoors (hopefully in air conditioning!), but the temperatures in Houston are still rising — and the preferred way to cool down might be with a tasty cocktail. Luckily, Houston’s best bars and restaurants are still serving drinks, whether that means a specialty margarita, mojito, or rum punch.

For the taste of summer you’re craving, check out these 8 must-try bars and restaurants. Each one is a local, Black-owned business that stands ready to quench your thirst and serve you great takes on everything from classic comfort foods to revamped Southern favorites. These spots each make a perfect destination for those looking to spend their dining dollars more mindfully now, too.

Be sure to check each of these spots before you go, though, as the state continues to adapt to new guidelines and regulations in reopening; as of publication, Texas’ reopening plans were put on hold amid a surge of coronavirus cases. A number of Houston’s restaurants have resumed (or pared down) dine-in service, and this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit houstontx.gov. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.

Comfort food with global influences like chicken-fried cauliflower — plus an entire menu devoted to different takes on gourmet chicken and waffles, like the jerk chicken and waffles — are on offer, alongside Taste’s list of carefully crafted house cocktails. If you’re going for one of the Champagne and fried chicken pairings at this lively midtown eatery, get the party started with one of the specialty craft cocktails first. Try the Cast Away, a piña colada riff. This version uses BACARDÍ Coconut Rum and BACARDÍ Superior with yellow chartreuse for a unique herbal infusion.

Turkey Leg Hut

Not just a clever name, the Turkey Leg Hut is home to Lynn and Nakia Price’s famous turkey legs — and meat lovers won’t be disappointed. The Prices first shared their delectable turkey legs with the world in the parking lot of the Houston Rodeo four years ago, and today, the brick-and-mortar Hut offers everything from regular turkey legs to varieties stuffed with goodies, like alfredo shrimp or cajun crawfish mac and cheese. Other favorites include their swamp fries — fries topped with turkey, Monterey jack, cheddar cheese. If you’re feeling thirsty by now, the Hut has plenty of drinks to help wash it all down. The PATRÓN Reposado margarita is always a great choice, and the famous mojito uses ST~GERMAIN in addition to BACARDÍ rum for an extra floral flavor.

H2O Sports Bar & Lounge

This lively, Black-owned sports bar offers up dozens of flat-screen televisions for watching the game, as well as an outdoor patio serving hookah and a full bar menu. Bar favorites like mozzarella sticks and loaded fries can be found alongside burgers and fried fish. The bar offers bottle service and special theme nights, too, like Taco Tuesday and INT’L Wednesday.

Lost & Found

Lost & Found, a new midtown hotspot from owners Mojeed Martins and Jonathan Reitzell (the same as Prospect Park, also on this list), features a dog-friendly outdoor area and plenty of Instagram-worthy accoutrements — think chevron-striped walls, flashy neon, and a colorful mural of rapper Travis Scott. The drinks menu is no different, with cocktails that do everything from light up and smoke to those served with edible flowers, like the Champagne Showers, a blend of D’USSÉ Cognac, BACARDÍ Banana, lime juice, and Champagne foam, topped with a giant bloom. The food menu features Southern and Cajun favorites like shrimp and crawfish dip, seafood gumbo, and jerk lamb chops and ribeye.

Prospect Park Restaurant

One of two locations of Prospect Park in Houston, this restaurant serves up the same classic bar food and colorful drinks menu as its sibling, and also has an outdoor patio and weekly food and drink specials. (Tuesday means $2 tacos, and Wednesday means 50 cent wings.) The real party, though, is on Sunday nights. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. then, the bar is home to Zydeco Sunday, which celebrates the type of music created by French Creole-speaking residents of southwest Louisiana. A Cajun brunch is also offered along with $3 mimosas, but no reason you shouldn’t try the Prospect Punch with your meal: made with BACARDÍ Mango, blue curacao, island punch schnapps, and fresh-squeezed juices, notably served in a fishbowl.

During the day, Seaside Lounge offers up an amazing selection of oysters and traditional seafood in an outdoor setting with private cabanas. At night, the space transitions to live DJ sets with craft cocktails and small plates to share.
