San Diego’s love affair with craft cocktails is at an all-time high, especially for the Old Fashioned: a quintessential favorite with a recipe that hasn’t changed much since 1806. It’s simply bourbon mixed with sugar, water, and aromatic bitters; although an orange peel was added around 1895. Now that the weather is starting to cool down, there’s no better time to order one and revel in fall. One of our favorite ways to elevate the classic cocktail is by ordering it with Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, thanks to its rich taste and notes of warm spice and subtle smoke.

The folks at Elijah Craig have even established their own Old Fashioned Week (from October 14-October 23), not only to celebrate the classic cocktail, but to benefit the Southern Smoke Foundation: a crisis relief organization that provides a safety net for food and beverage industry workers nationwide.

Here are some of our favorite places to sip an Elijah Craig Small Batch Old Fashioned in the San Diego area — and you can find even more participating bars at oldfashionedweek.com.

Frankie's

A traditional whiskey bar at the recently renovated The Brick Hotel in Oceanside, Frankie’s is charming and comfy, with a long, inviting wood bar and lots of cozy leather banquettes against a backdrop of rustic exposed brick. They feature a delicious classic Old Fashioned made with Elijah Craig Small Batch, and during Old Fashioned Week the bar will offer their own riff of the classic cocktail featuring Elijah Craig, R&D Cherry Apple bitters, and burnt cinnamon syrup. The bar doesn’t have a kitchen, but on Thursdays you can bring in food from the Oceanside Sunset Market. They’ll have small bites from the restaurant next door, Q + A Oyster, during Old Fashioned Week.

Campfire

Nearly everything on Campfire’s menu is kissed by fire, including bar manager Nick Sinutko’s dynamic cocktail program. He uses Elijah Craig Small Batch as the foundation for a sultry, tropical-leaning Old Fashioned featuring plantains charred under live embers, brown butter, cacao nibs, and amaro: delivering a range of flavor that compliments the warm caramel and hard spice of the spirit. It’s perfect alongside their smokey, coffee-rubbed brisket, served over polenta with pickled green tomatoes.

Draft Republic - San Marcos

A sports bar with an eight-lane bowling alley, a full-swing golf simulator, an arcade and a dog-friendly patio is cool; but a sports bar that also makes a great Old Fashioned is an absolute dream come true. The Big Kid Mac N’ Cheese is a no-brainer here, where house-smoked brisket, roasted poblanos, and sharp cheddar smothers tender cavatappi pasta. Its classic flavors are enhanced by notes of sweet oak and hints of smokey chipotle found in Elijah Craig Small Batch.

L'Auberge Del Mar

Endless ocean views and breezy day drinking are always on the menu at the L’Auberge Del Mar Resort. Start off at the Pool Bar with an Elite Old Fashioned, made with Elijah Craig, demerara gomme and Angostura bitters, before making your way to the restaurant Adelaide for a refined dinner of coastal California cuisine. Order the Alaskan Halibut and an Old Fashioned. The smokey oak and caramel of Elijah Craig both complements and contrasts with the delicate fish, earthy grilled summer cabbages, rhubarb, sweet onion and green curry butter.

Sit back and sip a classic Old Fashioned while admiring some of the most beautiful views of the San Diego skyline, harbor, and bay in the city. For Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week, beverage and wine director Grant Olson has created an innovative Old Fashioned using Elijah Craig Small Batch that’s been washed in Snake River Farms ribeye fat. It’s mixed with black walnut bitters he’s house-smoked over mesquite, a spoonful of simple syrup, and a touch of salt, deftly stirred and poured over a large ice cube. As a final flourish, he lightly torches a rosemary sprig to garnish the drink, along with a tangerine peel. Olson recommends pairing it with the Snake River Farms Eye of the Ribeye and madeira-braised mushrooms to enhance the heady smoke and cedar aromas of Elijah Craig Small Batch.

Born and Raised

Is there anything more satisfying than a big, brawny steak and a good, stiff drink? Born & Raised’s swanky leather booths, sparkling chandeliers, and tableside carts give it a sexy, Rat Pack vibe and some of the best people-watching in San Diego. An Elijah Craig Old Fashioned is a natural pairing with a perfectly cross-hatched, dry-aged Tomahawk steak; or pair Elijah Craig Small Batch with the darling of 1940s haute cuisine: Smoked Pheasant Under Glass.

The Whiskey House

The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in the door of The Whiskey House are the hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of whiskey lining the walls. In fact, they set a Guinness World Record in 2019 for having 2,467 commercially available whiskey varieties. If you’re day drinking, try pairing your Elijah Craig Small Batch Old Fashioned with Cinnamon Pancakes. It sounds a little bizarre, but trust us: it works. A Scotch egg and an Old Fashioned also makes for a surprisingly satisfying snack.

Prohibition Lounge

You might walk right past the nondescript door to the Law Offices of Eddie O’Hara, Esq., without realizing that it hides the entrance to Prohibition Lounge: one of San Diego’s oldest speakeasies. Just flick the light switch to the right of the door and you’ll gain access to an immersive, Gatsby-era experience in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. Start your evening with the house Old Fashioned, featuring Elijah Craig Small Batch, demerara sugar, and a double dose of bitters (R&D Aromatic #7 and R&D Cherry Apple). They don’t serve food, but you can visit their sister restaurant, El Chingon when it’s time to refuel.

Huntress

Filet mignon, prime porterhouse, and 32-day aged Tomahawks are the stars at Huntress; but executive chef James Montejano shows a clever hand with seafood as well, sugar-spicing a hefty prime rib of salmon to reflect the cinnamon and pepper notes in Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon. Although you might not think of an Old Fashioned as an after-dinner drink, order one to pair with the photo-worthy Magic Mushroom dessert. It hints at Elijah Craig’s subtle milk chocolate and baking spice finish to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Seven Grand San Diego

Seven Grand takes whiskey drinking seriously, but not tediously so. This is the place to bring your whiskey snob friends or engage in deep, meaningful conversations over a splendid cocktail. Here, your Elijah Craig Small Batch Old Fashioned will never suffer from over stirring, too much sugar, or a garnish of yesterday’s orange peel. They don’t have a kitchen, but there’s nothing stopping you from walking two doors down to Gelati & Peccati for a couple of slices of Roman-style pizza, then going back for an Elijah Craig nightcap (or two).
