Address: 186 Union Street, Providence, Rhode Island
Key Players: Benjamin Sukle, Heidi Sukle
Projected Opening: January 7, 2016
Benjamin and Heidi Sukle, the owners of the high-end Providence hit Birch, are at it again, bringing national attention to downtown Providence with the opening of Oberlin. Where Birch is 18 seats and a tasting menu, chef Benjamin Sukle tells Eater that he wants ~50-seater Oberlin to have "that awesome neighborhood restaurant vibe that downtown is missing," with a menu of elevated comfort foods like handmade pastas and simple vegetables, plus an extensive raw bar.
Sukle is particularly excited to work with the farmers and fishermen whose products he showcases at Birch. "With how small our restaurant is, and being on their boats, we see how much we can't order," he says, noting it's the same with the farms. "There's a lot of product that we don't use, and this is another venue to be able to do that." Expect warm woods, local art from the nearby Rhode Island School of Design, and a totally open kitchen that looks more like home than a workplace. | All Providence Coverage [E]
