Starbucks takes a step in the right direction of limiting nightmare drink demands
Starbucks has put an end to orders made through its app that involve an inhuman number of modifications to a drink. Business Insider reports that, as of late July, customers can no longer add the same “modifier” — such as syrups, sauces, or espresso shots — more than 12 times, thanks to an app update.
Baristas have long been plagued by overly complicated “secret menu” orders customized to hell and back, which not only increase all customers’ wait times, but also make workers’ jobs exponentially harder — a reality that Starbucks acknowledged “loud and clear” in an internal memo to employees that was obtained by Business Insider.
There is still no limit to the total number of unique modifiers a customer can add to a beverage, so you can still get a little freaky, but at the very least this change will help cut down on stunt orders like the disgusting-sounding, customer-created “20/20” (20 pumps vanilla, 20 pumps hazelnut). “People seem to be as extra as they possibly can be through the app because they don’t have to sound stupid asking us for all the mods,” a Starbucks employee told Business Insider. From now on, if you want an excessively modified nightmare drink, you’re going to have to ask for it in person, and hopefully feel some contrition doing it, too.
