The ‘Big Little Lies’ Ice Cream Scene Was the Biggest Lie So Far

The biggest mystery of season two revolves around a food fight that never happened

Big Little Lies fans were promised a scene where Reese Witherspoon hurtles an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep’s head, and last night, HBO’s hit drama let them down.

During the otherwise excellent episode “Kill Me,” Witherspoon’s character, Madeline, does indeed run into Mary Louise, the villainous grandma played by Streep, while holding an ice cream cone in one hand. In the scene, Madeline simply exchanges barbs with Mary Louise, and they go their separate ways. But ever since last summer, when set photos depicting Madeline tossing the cone at Mary Louise were released, fans have been hungry to see this food fight break out — and now they are understandably upset.

When asked about the photos last summer, Witherspoon confirmed that she did in fact throw the cone at Streep while filming this scene. “I nailed her, and I felt really good about it,” she said at an event promoting her other show Shine on with Reese. “Once you watch the show, you’ll understand why I did it. You’ll be happy, too. It’s one of those moments when you got to do it, even if it’s Meryl Streep.” Witherspoon also backed up this claim on Twitter. But it seems that somewhere between filming and editing the second season, the scene got left on the cutting room floor.

Here are some of the best Twitter reactions to last night’s ice cream fight that never was:

According to Meryl Streep, the cone toss will eventually land on the DVD extras for Big Little Lies Season 2. “[Reese] just told me it’s not in the show!” the Academy Award-winning actor told Entertainment Tonight at the Season 2 premiere. “It’s [going to be] in the DVD extras.” Although DVD sales have been in sharp decline over the last decade, the inclusion of this scene might inspire some Big Little Lies fans to pick up a copy (and perhaps a new DVD player as well).
