Although they drink a lot of fancy grape juice throughout Netflix’s Wine Country, the stars of the new comedy — Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, and Emily Spivey — are not actually oenophiles in real life. But a new video from Netflix suggests that these comedians have plenty of enthusiasm for drinking and talking about wine, even if they don’t have the knowledge to back it all up. “It’s a $60 bottle of teen wine,” Gasteyer jokes after sampling a glass of riesling. “It has like a Willy Wonka quality,” Poehler says between sips of malbec. “This is too sweet for me — I like it so dry that it’s just powered dust,” Pell explains while holding a glass of Japanese plum wine.
Wine Country — which lands on Netflix this Friday, May 10 — is partially inspired by a real trip that these six SNL alums took in Sonoma, California for Rachel Dratch’s 50th birthday a few years ago. Chef Gerard Nebesky, the proprietor of Gerard’s Paella Y Tapas in nearby Santa Rosa, helped organize the meals for the birthday weekend and he cooked his famous paella for the vacationing pals. (Jason Schwartzman plays a version of the chef in the film.) “The movie is much crazier than the real birthday was,” Rachel Dratch tells Eater SF. “But there’s a little inspiration that happened in real life that blew up in the movie.”
