Weeks after the James Beard Foundation announced the year’s slate of chef and restaurant finalists, the results are in. At a ceremony in Chicago, chefs, restaurateurs, and other hospitality world insiders gathered for what are considered by many to be the most prestigious awards in American hospitality.
Last year marked a notable shift towards a more diverse restaurant awards, and this year the foundation’s commitment to more equitable awards was also reflected in the makeup of the winners. Mashama Bailey, nominated the second time for Best Chef: Southeast for Savannah restaurant the Grey, won that award this year. Kwame Onwuachi, chef of Kith/Kin and author of memoir Notes From a Young Black Chef, took home the Rising Star Chef award. In his acceptance speech, he commented he was fulfilling “my ancestors’ wildest dreams.” Plus, Young Joni chef Ann Kim took home the award for Best Chef: Midwest, Via Carota’s Jody Williams and Rita Sodi won for Best Chef: New York, and Willa Jean’s Kelly Fields is the year’s Outstanding Pastry Chef.
It was also a big night for Chicago: the winners for Outstanding Restaurateur, Outstanding Baker, and Outstanding Restaurant Design (76 Seats and Over) all hail from the awards’ host city. Straight ahead, find out who else walked away a winner.
