562 spellers made it to the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee and over three harrowing days, they faced off against the unabridged Merriam Webster. Thursday night, for the first time in the history of the competition, eight victors beat the dictionary and received the title of 2019 co-champion.
These eight winners and the spellers they competed against are strong of heart, strong of will, and strong of pure intellect — and based on the sheer number of food words in the competition, they must have also been starving.
Here are the 2019 Scripps Spelling Bee’s food-related words. Scripps National Spelling Bee director of editorial, Corrie Loeffler, tells me that food words are “often favorites among our spellers,” and this year’s list spans types of salads, types of cakes and custards, names for whole meals, condiments, alternative meats, and buzz-word ingredients from goji to guacamole.
