Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un are scheduled to meet one-on-one tonight in Singapore, marking a historic summit that could be a first step toward deescalating nuclear tensions between the U.S. and North Korea. Whether the face-to-face talks will usher in any sort of lasting peace will remain to be seen — but don’t worry, there will be tacos.
To commemorate the first-ever meeting between sitting U.S. and North Korean leaders, restaurants in Singapore are serving limited-time themed dishes that combine American and Korean ingredients and flavors. Mexican restaurant Lucha Loco is presenting a duo of politically motivated fusion tacos: The Rocket Man Taco includes Korean fried chicken, spicy sauce, pickled white radish, and sesame (too bad no one invited Roy Choi, who’s been slinging Korean-American tacos 9,000 miles away in Los Angeles for more than a decade). The El Trumpo Taco mimics one of the President’s go-to foods with a burger patty, melted cheese, chipotle ketchup, secret sauce, lettuce, and pickles. (Trump, famously a fan of Big Macs, has reportedly been eating his burgers with half the bun removed lately, in an attempt to make them healthier.) Purchasers of Lucha Loco’s tacos get a chance to take a swing at the restaurant’s Trump and Kim pinatas.
Meanwhile, Wolf Burger is serving a menu item it calls the Burger for World Peace, involving bulgogi beef and kimchi mayo along with American cheddar, served on a brioche bun; the restaurant is promoting the burger on Instagram using the hashtag #SettleTheBeef.
High-end hotels are getting in the game, too, with the five-star Royal Plaza on Scotts launching a Trump-Kim burger with a minced chicken and kimchi patty and Summit iced tea, a blend of American-style iced tea with Korean yuzu honey tea. At bar Hopheads, a special cocktail called the Bromance combines Trump’s favorite Diet Coke with tequila and Asahi Black, with a shot of soju on the side.
Trump and Kim’s meeting is slated for the fancy Capella Hotel on the island of Sentosa, off Singapore’s southern coast; no word on what, if anything, the politicians might dine on themselves.
