- The E. coli outbreak linked to tainted romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona, continues to spread. As of May 2, 121 people in 25 states have fallen ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and one person in California has died. The CDC recommends consumers and restaurants avoid all romaine lettuce — chopped, whole heads, salad mixes, etc. — unless there is confirmation the greens did not come from the Yuma growing region.
- If you’re feeling particularly peckish and looking for a good deal, there is a restaurant in Vancouver that is serving a five-pound burrito challenge. Devour this monstrous Tex-Mex dish in 30 minutes or less, and it’s free.
- And if you’re still hungry, Arby’s has a new sandwich that will surely make your cardiologist grin. The “Bourbon BBQ Triple Stack” is loaded up with fried chicken, a burger patty, brisket, bacon, onion strings, cheese, and various sauces. It checks in at 910 calories.
- Pharaoh of Flavor Guy Fieri is a little busy these days with three Food Network series — Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives; Guy’s Grocery Games; and Guy’s Ranch Kitchen — on the air. Nevertheless, he’s “totally down” for a potential new project on Discovery Channel.

This comes after 450,000 people signed a petition to push the fast-food giant away from the beverage accessories that have become public enemy No. 1 for environmentalists everywhere. Mickey D’s has already made plans to get rid of plastic straws at its United Kingdom restaurants.
- In Germany, McDonald’s locations are selling camembert doughnuts. The new side is being described as if “a doughnut and a cheese stick had a baby.” Sounds delicious.
- A man in Tucson is giving away free In-N-Out Burger to kids whose schools have been closed as teachers strike for better pay and resources. This is great, because when schools close, many kids often go without a meal.
- No surprise here: The chicken and gravy shortages that plagued Kentucky Fried Chicken in the U.K. had a negative impact on the chain’s first-quarter earnings.
- Famous film director and New York Knicks basketball fan Spike Lee shares his rules for eating pizza in NYC. Lee’s most important commandment: Never eat pizza with a fork and knife.
- Here’s a look inside the first P.F. Chang’s to open in China. It looks pretty much like every P.F. Chang’s that exists outside of China.
- The Seattle Times has an interview with chef Edouardo Jordan of the lauded restaurants Salare and JuneBaby. Jordan discusses hard times in his life, his interpretation of Southern cuisine, what he’s trying to accomplish with JuneBaby, and more.
- Fewer teens are working in 2018, which is contributing to a labor shortage at fast-food restaurants.
- Finally, Häagen-Dazs quietly tweaked its vanilla ice cream recipe, and people are upset. Has Häagen-Dazs never heard of New Coke?
