Not to knock Starbucks, but the rise of independently owned coffee shops in cities across America and beyond has been a win on various fronts. There have never been more ways to drink coffee, from pour-over to nitro brew, from flat whites to cortados; more local roasters are taking root, offering small batch, ultra fresh beans; and, not to be underrated, free wifi has never been more plentiful.

Here’s the latest look at the best cafes and coffeehouses, particularly ones that are great for buckling down and getting work done. Freelance warriors in NYC can post up in the sleek Black Fox Coffee Co., while LA folks can enjoy the high ceilings and big windows of Cognoscenti Coffee in the city’s Fashion District. In Seattle, there’s the ultra-minimalist Sound and Fog, and in Atlanta, East Pole Coffee Co. offers a similarly airy vibe. Oh, and most importantly: All the spots on all these maps offer undeniably excellent coffee.
