A bottle of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce, a limited edition condiment that hasn’t been available since Disney’s 1998 premiere of Mulan, has finally made it into the hands of the creators of Rick and Morty.
The condiment played a big role in the surprise season three premiere of the comedy. In the episode titled “The Rickshank Rickdemption,” one of the series’ main protagonists Rick Sanchez revisits a memory of going to a McDonald’s drive-thru and ordering chicken McNuggets with Szechuan sauce. By the end of the episode Rick reveals that his soul goal — his “one armed man” — is to find more of the sauce.
Following the release of the episode, the creators of Rick and Morty lobbied on Twitter for McDonald’s to bring back the sauce. Thousands of fans signed a petition through Change.org begging McDonald’s to revive the recipe. It even inspired its own Binging with Babish cooking video. A pair of sauces eventually landed on eBay by way of “an old car” and fetched a $14,700 bid.
The Rick and Morty Twitter account shared a photo of the bottle of sauce sent by McDonald’s complete with a label that recommends it not be served “to mad scientists traveling with their teenage grandson; potential non-scientist versions of mad scientists from an alternate dimension; and/or Jerry.”
Guys.

Co-creator Justin Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, later shared the full Mulan Szechuan sauce package.

It came with a note with a pitch for All Day Breakfast and a suggestion that more fans could soon score bottles of the sought after condiment:
Justin,
We finally did it. It took months, but we’ve finally brought back some Szechuan Sauce. We’ll spare you the physics, but turns out, Dimension C-1998M is a dimension where it’s always 1998. 1998 every day. No smartphones, no social media. It’s a weird, scary place. But they’ve go Szechuan Sauce on the regular menu.
So here we are with some precious cargo—the Szechuan Sauce your remember and some sou-venirs from some of the dimensions we tried along the way.
We wish we could’ve brought more sauce through, but we couldn’t risk keeping a portal like that open. Think about it, if you knew in 1998 that McDonald’s would have All Day Breakfast in 2017, would you really want to stay in 1998? Of course not. If we left the portal open, we’d have puka shells, bucket hats and boy bands as far as the eye could see. It’s too risky, even sauce as delicious as this.
A few lucky fans will also get to experience the glory, but the first bottle in this dimension is for you.
Stay Schwifty,
Chef Mike
On Sunday morning, ahead of the show’s official season three premiere, McDonald’s tweeted out a photo of three bottles with a note that “75% of all our Szechuan Sauce in the universe is in this picture.”
