• Arby’s really does have the meats — all of them. Starting this month, protein fans can bulk up the fast-food chain’s $10 secret menu sandwich, called the Meat Mountain, by adding a wild-caught Alaskan pollock fish filet to a hefty sandwich of “two crispy chicken tenders, roast turkey, ham, one slice of Swiss cheese, corned beef, brisket, Angus steak, one slice of cheddar cheese, roast beef, and three half-strips of bacon” for no extra cost. Just say you want your Meat Mountain “Denali-style” and you can add some surf to eight types of turf — the fish is the only other protein item that wasn’t already on the sandwich — without an additional charge (through the end of the month).
• Pepsi will soon unleash two “so old it’s new” flavors upon the drinking public: 1893 Citrus Cola and 1893 Black Currant Cola will join the brand’s “source-conscious” 1893 line, which launched last year. Here’s hoping they don’t go the way of Pepsi Holiday Spice.
• Actor Tom Hanks sent the White House Press Corps a new espresso machine, which now adorns the group’s break room with the note “keep up the good fight for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Especially the Truth part.”
• Noma’s new co-owner Ali Sonko gets the brief profile treatment in the New York Times, which shares his “rags to riches” story.
• David Chang’s ideal “Last Meal on Earth” is literally a series of meals, involving taking several flights all over the world.
• It’s been two weeks since the Day Without Immigrants left many restaurants closed — either by choice or necessity. Eater DC checked in with some chefs and owners to see if the protest was all worth it.
