UPDATE: The livestream is over, here’s the complete list of the 2017 finalists.

Today, the James Beard Foundation announces the finalists for its annual awards. Often referred to as “the Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Foundation Awards highlight American restaurants and chefs, and are considered among the highest honors in the industry. Like last year, the announcement is taking place California; this time, the Foundation has chosen Los Angeles as its home base for the reveal. Food personalities and members of the press, including Eater LA, are now gathered at Suzanne Goin’s AOC for the announcement breakfast.

Last month, the Foundation released its “long list” of semifinalists in the chef and restaurant categories. Today, that list gets whittled from 20+ nominees per category down to five — eight in each. Today the Foundation also reveals the nominees in its book, broadcast, and journalism categories.
