“First, there’s a layer of ladyfingers, then a layer of jam, then custard — which I made from scratch — then raspberries, more ladyfingers, then beef sautéed with peas and onions, more custard, and then bananas, and then I just put some whipped cream on top.” This is how Rachel describes her “traditional English trifle” she made for Thanksgiving in the beloved Season 6 episode of Friends. Unfortunately, as Ross discovers, two pages in Rachel’s cookbook were stuck together, and she combined the recipes for trifle and shepherd’s pie.
It’s hard to imagine anyone would want to prepare this dish in real life, but for those maniacs who do, YouTube chef Andrew Rea is here with a demonstration. On his “Binging With Babish” channel, Rea makes Rachel’s take on the trifle, which he can barely choke down, and he then adjusts the recipe in an attempt to produce an edible version. Rea says the final product isn’t awesome, “but it’s totally palatable, which makes it a damned sight better than Rachel’s trifle.”
