After years of rumors and speculation, the identity of anonymous, Instagram-famous mega-tipper Tips for Jesus has been confirmed. The man behind the exorbitant gratuities is, in fact, former PayPal vice president Jack Selby, according to a report from the New York Post.
Selby was spotted at Upper West Side bar Guyer’s, run by romance-novel cover model Cindy Guyer, over the weekend ordering just over $100 in drinks — but he left a $5,000 tip.
“The bartender was brought to tears,” says a spy.
The receipt said “Tips for Jesus” and, “We’re back!”
Tips for Jesus typically announces its good deeds by posting photos of receipts on Instagram. But in this latest instance, the mystery tipper — Selby, apparently — “forgot to take a pic,” so a shot of the Post story was uploaded instead. Selby’s name is retracted from the image, but this appears to be a coy confirmation of the unmasking. Cindy Guyer also ’grammed the story, but she left it unedited.
Selby, currently the managing director for investment company Clarium Capital Management LLC, is reportedly worth around $50 million. The $5,000 tip was the first announced on the Instagram account since a $2,000 tip on a $318 tab was posted in January.
