Mission Chinese chef Danny Bowien is at the center of the show

Season six of Anthony Bourdain and Zero Point Zero’s award-winning non-fiction series Mind of a Chef is premiering tomorrow, November 14, with a spate of episodes focusing on James Beard Award-winning chef/restaurateur Danny Bowien. In a major shift for the program, this new season will not be premiering on PBS, the network that hosted the show for the past five years, but on Facebook Watch, a new platform from the world’s biggest social media entity. Facebook launched the Watch tab over the summer to a small number of users and has been expanding it with a mix of original programming — some of which is funded by the company — and select sporting events over the last four months.

The first three episodes of Mind of a Chef will drop on the platform tomorrow, and then one episode will be released each week through mid-December (click here to sign up for all future episodes of Mind of a Chef for free).

In a statement about the new season, executive producer/narrator Anthony Bourdain remarks:

Danny Bowien is one of the most influential chefs in America today... Born in Korea, raised in Oklahoma, and drawing on a multitude of influences both in medium and locales, from the Sichuan province of Chengdu to San Francisco, he challenges the notion of authenticity at Mission Chinese Food while remaining true to himself, constantly changing and redefining what "American" cuisine means for us all.

Bowien operates Mission Chinese restaurants in New York City and San Francisco, both of which have been staples of the Eater 38 lists over the years. The chef also ran a Mexican-influenced establishment, Mission Cantina, in Manhattan for three years.

Seasons one through five of the show are now available on Netflix. Stay tuned for more details on what to expect from Season 6, and please join us for a conversation about the first three episodes tomorrow afternoon on Eater’s Facebook page.
