150 Restaurants Will Donate Proceeds to Puerto Rico on World Food Day

José Andrés is doing his utmost to help Puerto Rico on the ground in the wake of the devastating Hurricane Maria, and now, his nonprofit World Central Kitchen is holding an event stateside to benefit Puerto Rico and Haiti, whose 2010 earthquake was the initial inspiration for the organization.

On October 13, World Central Kitchen’s fourth-annual World Food Day, 150 restaurants nationwide will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to World Central Kitchen’s ongoing operations in Puerto Rico and to a new culinary school in Port au Prince, Haiti. The participating restaurants include Stephanie Izard’s the Girl and the Goat in Chicago, Mario Batali’s Otto in New York, of course, Andrés’s own D.C. restaurants Jaleo and Beefsteak, among many, many others. .

Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, chef Andrés has laid out a 21-day plan for his on-the-ground operations. In a Twitter video, addressed to President Trump, who has finally made it to the island, Andrés says World Central Kitchen has identified eight locations around Puerto Rico where they will set up kitchens, starting tomorrow.

“I think, Mr. President, that we will feed the island. We only need to make sure that we put away the red tape, and we keep moving forward,” he says. “We have over 200 volunteers a day here. We can be doing this. We only need leadership.”
