In this week’s episode of Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson heads deep into the San Fernando Valley to visit Saj Bakery, a small family-run business that specializes in Lebanese cuisine.
The Succar brothers, Charlie and Mel, take pride in the traditional cuisine they offer including saj, the namesake of the cafe, which is a thin handmade flatbread cooked on a huge flat iron griddle and topped with za'atar (a thyme-based spice blend), labne (a tangy, thick yogurt), vegetables, or sujuk (a sliced, spicy sausage). Saj Bakery’s real specialty is its shawarma — spits of tender meat marinated in spices and citrus that are cooked on a rotisserie before being sliced off and served in soft bread. Watch the episode above for a look at these and the other traditional Middle Eastern delicacies.
