Nashville Hot Chicken has been around for decades, but it’s really come into its own during the last few years — even KFC has gotten on the bandwagon. On this week’s episode of Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson heads to the unlikeliest of places to seek out this spicy, fried fare: a Chinatown strip mall just north of downtown Los Angeles.
Inside, Peterson meets up with chef Johnny Ray Zone, who owns a small storefront, Howlin’ Ray’s, with his wife Amanda. Zone fell in love with hot chicken on a visit to Nashville, and sought to bring the authentic product to the west coast. He fries up some chicken with varying levels of heat, and Peterson decides to try the hottest type, called "Howlin’," which uses some of the hottest peppers on the planet. While he’s eating (and sweating), Peterson makes a couple of new friends. Watch as they compare notes on the spicy heat of Howlin’ Ray’s chicken.
