Watch: Gordon Ramsay's Tutorial on Shooting and Cooking Pigeon

'Rich, gamey, and delicious'

Shouty chef Gordon Ramsay is known more for his culinary acumen than his hunting skills. In this video, he puts the latter to the test in an attempt to prepare a plate of fresh pigeon, which he calls "one of the tastiest birds to eat, but one of the trickiest to shoot." Ramsay explains how the bird is a pest for English farmers, and that it makes a fine meal.

"Wood pigeons are rich, gamey, and delicious, but it's because they gorge themselves on millions of pounds of crops a year," Ramsay says in the video. "So to help farmers, we should be eating as many as possible."

After some target practice, Ramsay takes to the field and tries to bag a few birds. There are plenty of missed shots — and even more swearing — but in the end he has enough for a proper lunch. His hunting companion offers a tutorial on how to quickly dress the pigeon, and the chef prepares a salad with greens, pancetta, and black pudding. When it's all said and done, it seems Ramsay is acutely aware of his strengths and weaknesses.

"I can clearly cook," he says, "but I can't fucking shoot."
