Will the promise of a brand-new protein option lure estranged Chipotle customers back? The company is certainly hoping so. Today the burrito chain launches its newest protein option in six cities, according to a press release.

The spicy ground sausage will be lighter than a traditional chorizo, thanks to a non-traditional blend of chicken and pork that's seasoned with cumin, paprika, and chipotle. (The last time Chipotle introduced a new protein option was 2014, when it rolled out the vegan sofritas.)

Those who haven't been put off the chain's food by numerous E. coli and norovirus scares can sample the new menu item today in a burrito, bowl, salad, or tacos, provided they're located in Columbus, Ohio; Manhattan; or Sacramento or San Diego, California; it's also available at one restaurant in Denver as well as a location inside Washington, D.C.'s Dulles Airport. It will hit stores nationwide by fall.

Chipotle's multi-pronged recovery plan also includes a new rewards program, Chiptopia, which is set to launch July 1.
