Politics be damned, sometimes you just want a chicken sandwich — even when politics are your business, apparently. Beginning early Wednesday, Democratic lawmakers in Washington, DC staged a sit-in on the House floor in an effort to force a vote on new gun control legislation.
All that protesting works up an appetite, of course — and the Democrats resorted to having interns deliver food from Chick-fil-A, according to the bloodthirsty gossip hounds at TMZ; video shot outside the Capitol building shows Congressional interns loading a whole mess of Chick-fil-A onto a cart.
Considering the chain's historically controversial position on LGBTQ rights, it seems like an odd choice of meals — not to mention the fact that nearly all of Chick-fil-A's political donations (93 percent from 2011 to 2014, to be exact) go to Republican candidates and organizations. But to Chick-fil-A's credit, an Orlando location forewent its usual Sunday off to feed people waiting in line to donate blood following the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub.
I love that democrats are taking a stand on gun control. I love the sit-in idea but dammit, Chick-fil-A, really? #LGBT— Melissa ♊️ (@melissareah) June 23, 2016
According to Google Maps, there are three Chick-fil-A locations located within three miles of the Capitol building — and nearly three times as many McDonald's within that same radius (though Big Macs wouldn't make much political sense either). Perhaps Shake Shack would have been a more politically appropriate choice?
