Watch Rock Star Sushi Chef Masa Takayama Make His Favorite Cocktail

A twist on Bar Masa’s "Jalapeño Ja"

As the chef and owner of Masa, the first Japanese restaurant in the United States to earn a three-star rating from the Michelin guide, Masa Takayama understands the importance of hard work — as well as the value of a well-made cocktail. On this episode of Consumed, chef Masa shares the recipe for his favorite post-work drink, a play on one of the cocktails on the menu at Bar Masa, his smaller bar and restaurant space adjacent to the original eponymous omakase restaurant in New York City. Watch the video above to see the chef construct the drink, a Jalapeño Ja, behind the bar, and follow along with the recipe below.

Jalapeño Ja

makes one drink

3 oz house-infused jalapeño vodka (for the Bar Masa method) or tequila (for Masa's at-home recipe)
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1 inch slice of Japanese cucumber

Grate Japanese cucumber.

Incorporate grated cucumber and remaining ingredients in a shaker tin.

Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.

Single strain into a chilled martini glass, and enjoy!
