Fancy restaurant guidebook pusher Michelin continues its parade of new stars: Last week in Girona, Spain the latest ratings for Spain and Portugal were unveiled.
No major shakeups or crushing blows for Spain this year, as all eight restaurants that received the coveted three-star rating (“exceptional cuisine worth a special journey”) in 2016 maintained their status this year.
The biggest news: Chef Martín Berasategui’s ten-year-old Barcelona restaurant, Lasarte, was the only restaurant to grab a new three-star rating this year, making him the most Michelin-decorated chef in Spain. (Berasategui also owns and operates an eponymous, three-starred restaurant in Basque Country.)
Lasarte is the first new three-star restaurant since 2014, when Spain’s “culinary enfant terrible” David Muñoz’s DiverXO was bestowed with the honor.
Spain now has a total of nine three-star restaurants, including Girona’s El Celler de Can Roca from brothers Juan, Jordi, and Josep Roca; and Arzak in San Sebastian, run by dynamic father-daughter duo Juan Mari and Elena Arzak.
Spain also added five new two-star restaurants — including Diego Guerrero’s Dstage in Madrid, bumped up from a single star last year — for a total of 23 altogether. Fifteen restaurants were newly crowned with a single star.
Meanwhile, Portugal has yet to produce a three-star restaurant, but added two new two-star restaurants this year (Il Gallo d’Oro and The Yeatman) and seven new one-star restaurants.
Next up on the Michelin docket: Tokyo’s newest star ratings are slated to be revealed today, followed by Germany on December 1.
