Barley beer was the first known alcohol to get people wasted.

In this new video from The Atlantic, a visual history of alcohol traces its origin from barley beer in 8,500 BC to the creation of high-alcohol beers in 2010. The short video also displays the invention of everything from wine in 7,000 BC to distilled spirits in the 12th century to the martini in the 1880s — all shown in chronological order. Go watch for a brief history of your favorite booze.
