Watch John Oliver Skewer Whole Foods and Its Asparagus Water

"Nobody should be buying pre-made asparagus water when you make it yourself every time you eat asparagus."

In a new clip, comedian and host of HBO's Last Week Tonight John Oliver took issue with Whole Foods' asparagus water, and the company's eventual apology and explanation. Giddy, and agitated, he launches into the segment: "First, nobody should be buying pre-made asparagus water when you make it yourself for free every time you eat asparagus."

On Whole Foods' apology and explanation that the water was supposed to be more like vegetable broth, Oliver says, "Yeah, that doesn't sound any less terrible... oh, we won't just sell you asparagus stalks in a jar of water... that way we can call the leftover wet asparagus 'artisanally moistened,' and sell it for three times the price... it's the Whole Foods way." Oliver has a better idea for how Whole Foods' reps should apologize: By promoting its other unique items, including, "Two baby carrots tied together with artisanal twine, or... refreshing probiotic avocado ice... a block of ice with an avocado balanced on top of it." It gets even better, watch the full clip above.
