Actress and comedian Mindy Kaling is adding "burger designer" to her lengthy resume. The creator of The Mindy Project is collaborating on a burger with Southern California-based chain Umami Burger.
Details are currently scarce: A spokesperson for the restaurant tells Eater that Kaling just did a "first tasting" Monday. The burger will likely debut nationwide in September to coincide with the launch of Kaling's new book Why Not Me and the premiere of new season of The Mindy Project on Hulu. Kaling Instagrammed a photo from the tasting and declared, "In the greatest collaboration since Jared and Subway, I am curating a burger for @UmamiBurger."
Umami Burger has a history of teaming up with well-known personalities on burgers as part of its Artists Series. The chain has even partnered with major chefs. Last year, chef José Andrés helped Umami Burger create a Spanish-themed burger featuring a patty made from pork and cured ham that is topped with manchego cheese and piquillo pepper confit. Just a few months before that, chef Michael Voltaggio collaborated with the chain on a Monte Cristo burger that features custard-soaked deep-fried buns, Gruyere fondue, and a side of syrup.
