Business Travelers Expense Starbucks More Than Any Other Restaurant

Which other restaurants round out the top ten?

Certify, makers of expense report software, has released some information about the restaurants business travelers frequent when they're spending their companies' money. They issued a quarterly report that examines the first three months of 2015 and takes a look into the eating and spending habits of businessmen and businesswomen.

The restaurant most frequently expensed is, unsurprisingly, Starbucks. The Seattle-based coffee brewers comprised a whopping 5.3% of all total expensed receipts. And all the frappuccinos add up: the average Starbucks tab was $12.22. Here are the other restaurants that filled out the top ten:

  1. Starbucks
  2. McDonald's
  3. Panera Bread
  4. Subway
  5. Dunkin' Donuts
  6. HMS Host
  7. Chick-Fil-A
  8. Wendy's
  9. Jimmy John's
  10. Burger King

Interestingly, Chipotle did not crack the list (though it did rank #2 for customer satisfaction). People spent the least amount of money at McDonald's (an average $7.91 per check) and the most at Panera Bread (a whopping $41.35 per visit). An impressive aspect of Panera's #3 ranking is that it has 1,800 locations, a fraction of the number that Starbucks and McDonald's have.

The sixth entry on the list, HMS Host, is a company that operates a collection of restaurant franchises in airports throughout the world. HMS Host runs some franchises of other restaurants that appear on the list, like Burger King and Starbucks, and it's unclear how Certify makes a distinction between those businesses.

Certify also broke down where travelers ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner: people ate a plurality of their breakfasts at Starbucks, their lunches at Subway, and their dinners at McDonald's.
