STARBUCKS — This Mother's Day, you can treat your mom to a $50 Starbucks gift card. What will the card cost you? $200, of course. Starbucks is marketing this premium gift which, according to its website, is "more than a gift card," as "the first ever metal & ceramic Starbucks Card." Starbucks thinks consumers will be willing to shell out an extra $150 for a decorative gift box and "laser-etched floral details" on the card.
HONG KONG — A new Hello Kitty-themed restaurant opened last week in Hong Kong's Yau Ma Tei district. While the region already has many cafes dedicated to the cute little cat (or is she a human?), this restaurant will feature, as expected, a ton of Hello Kitty decor as well as many new Hello Kitty-inspired dim sum, rice, and noodle dishes. Reservations are currently not accepted, so be prepared to stand in line.
HAWAII — The Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year with a two-week-long celebration will feature over 100 chefs and food personalities. The festival, which was co-founded by Hawaiian chefs Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, will run from August 29 to September 13. Some of the chefs who will be cooking for the various dinners and events include Nancy Silverton (Mozza), Christina Tosi (Momofuku Milk Bar), and Jonathan Waxman (Barbuto). Tickets are available here.
