Watch a Dumpling History Lesson With Hakkasan Chef Chen Zhineng

The dish symbolizes good luck.

Here's a video from YouTube channel Foodie that gives a brief primer on Chinese dumplings: New York City chef Chen Zhineng (of Hakkasan) explains the dish's symbolism while making a batch of some seriously delicious-looking dumplings. Along the way, he drops some pro-tips ("It's easier to make dumplings if the filling is cold") and trivia about the dish's history: Dumplings apparently "symbolize the old Chinese currency," which is why it signifies good luck.
