Calling all Back to the Future fans: Pepsi is releasing a limited edition bottle emulating the futuristic version shown in the 1989 film Back to the Future Part II. In the movie, actor Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly, who orders a Pepsi at a cafe and receives a bottle of "Pepsi Perfect" through a pneumatic tube. According to USA Today, the limited-edition collectible bottle will don the same name, though it will contain regular Pepsi inside.
PepsiCo's senior director of marketing Lou Arbetter notes: "Fans have always been a little crazy about [Pepsi Perfect] ... and so we wanted to take advantage of the fact that Marty traveled to the future, to this month, and wanted to actually come out with the project." In the movie, Marty goes to the future on October 21 of this year, which is when the bottle will be released. Pepsi is making 6,500 bottles, notes Time, and they will be priced at $20.15 each (get it?). The bottles will be sold online only. For those who can't wait a few more weeks to get a bottle, Pepsi is giving out 1,500 of them to fans dressed as Marty at New York Comic Con this week.
While the Back to the Future bottles will be filled with regular Pepsi, the company is also working on a line of craft sodas. Called Stubborn Soda, it includes adventurous flavors like black cherry with tarragon, orange hibiscus, pineapple cream, and agave-vanilla cream. This is in addition to Pepsi's other "craft" soda line called Caleb's Kola, which is debuted last year.
