Food Delivery Start-Up OrderUp Raises $7 Million

Baltimore-based food delivery start-up OrderUp has just raised $7 million in a round of funding. TechCrunch writes that the company is focused on bringing its food delivery services to smaller towns instead of large cities. OrderUp is currently live in places like Naperville, Illinois and Norman, Oklahoma.

The company says that it fulfills over 10,000 food deliveries each week and has 55 employees along with "hundreds" of delivery people. OrderUp operates across 35 markets currently and notes that it will use the new funding to "expand that significantly." OrderUp CEO Chris Jeffery tells TechCrunch that they have "identified 500 plus U.S markets that fit our current product and model." The company had previously raised $1.25 million in funding.

Food delivery start-ups have surpassed restaurant reservation start-ups as the app du jour. Food delivery service Caviar — which operates in cities like New York and Seattle — raised $13 million in funding earlier this year and was recently acquired by mobile payment company Square for around $90 million. Online shopping mega-giant Amazon also announced plans to enter the take-out food delivery game in the near future. Plus, British online food ordering service Just Eat announced that they have made just over $10 million in the first half of 2014 alone.
