NYT columnist and food evangelist Mark Bittman delves into the true cost of burgers in a new op-ed: "[U]p to 15 percent of fast food's share of direct and indirect costs arising from obesity are attributable to burgers." Beyond food cost, Bittman's study calculated the cost per burger of CO2 emissions (53 cents) and dollars spent preventing and treating related chronic diseases (48 cents). Bittman says it's "more difficult to calculate... the 'cost' of a shortened life." [NYT] [Photo: Kurman/Flickr]
