On the rare occasions when Americans demonstrate some sort of patriotism, food is usually involved. Case in point: Austin's Hat Creek Burgers is banning their on-draft Belgian-style beer for 48 hours in advance of tomorrow's 3 p.m. World Cup match between the US and Belgium. As Eater Austin points out, the beer in question — UFO White — is not even made in Belgium; it's brewed by Boston's Harpoon Brewery.
Hat Creek Burgers is following the lead of Southern staple Waffle House. The crime-ridden chain has called for a ban on Belgian Waffles. Clearly, the consumption of fluffy round waffles — or Belgian-style ale — just reeks of disloyalty.
