Watch Jamie Oliver's Failed Attempts to Speak Cantonese

Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

World-saving British chef Jamie Oliver is bringing a location of his ever-expanding chain Jamie's Italian to Hong Kong, so to celebrate he made a video chronicling his efforts to announce the restaurant in proper Cantonese. Coached by an off-screen Cantonese-speaker, Oliver just can't seem to get the hang of it. Some choice flubs: "I will open an enormous mountain"; "I will open something very slippery"; and "I will open an amazing Italian submarine." Go, watch:
