Looks like Los Angeles is the next city to hop on the cat cafe trend, Eater LA reports. A Kickstarter created by Carlos Wong is currently seeking $350,000 to build the aptly named Catfe. Perks include free play sessions with the cats, plush cat dolls, year-long cat sponsorships, and, at the highest level, the chance to name one of the cats. As of publishing, Catfe has raised $2,265 with 33 days to go. Wong does not yet have a location, but on the Kickstarter page he writes: "We want an easy to access, prime location. I think the natural place to open it would be Little Tokyo in Downtown." Wong tells LA Weekly that even though he doesn't have a location yet, he plans on opening within six months of receiving funding.
The idea is that Wong will work with local shelters to find cats to live at Catfe, which he hopes will become "a hub where we can spread the awareness of pet health and safety, hold adoptions from nearby shelters, [and] have animal therapy sessions." Wong apparently has past tea shop experience, and will be bringing his knowledge to a menu of bubble teas, coffees, teas, and snacks. According to the Kickstarter page, Wong has also began talks with the LA Public Health Department, who insist that the food and drinks not be near the cats.
California has been leading the way for cat cafes to take hold in the United States. Last month, two Bay Area cat cafes were announced: KitTea, the teahouse/cat playhouse in San Francisco and Cat Town Cafe, the nonprofit, adoption-focused cafe opening in Oakland. The trend isn't only catching on in the United States, however. Eater Montreal reports that the upcoming cat cafe Café Chat l'Heureux is raising opening funds and getting "a ton of media coverage."
