Website of the Day: The Food Porn Index

Here's a new website that tracks how many food porn social media pictures are tagged with various vegetables. While the Food Porn Index may sound part of Portlandia's celery sketch, it is a real website was created by Bolthouse Farms, producers of juices and smoothies. According to the website, the goal is to "change the way people think (and post) about fresh fruits and veggies" by "collect[ing] food porn hashtags and tack[ing] what kinds of food we're all sharing" and inspiring people to post more pictures of healthy produce.

The New York Times reports that the site uses an algorithm to track hastags of 24 fruits, vegetables, and junk foods. Apparently only 27.9% of food porn is "healthy," and foods like pie (over 12.7 million hashtags) and pizza (over 8.8 million tags) are trouncing healthier options like pomegranate (about 655,000 tags) and brussels sprouts (roughly 284,000 tags).
