Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Everything's coming up Tyler Florence: Hot off getting a semifinalist nod from the James Beard Foundation for Best Chef: West, the Food Network host has just earned an impressive three star (out of four) rave review from the San Francisco Chronicle's restaurant critic Michael Bauer for his restaurant Wayfare Tavern. Bauer finds that while the restaurant had been "very good but inconsistent" over the past four years (back in 2010 Bauer awarded the restaurant 2.5 stars), it has now "found its niche" and "matured nicely."

He's impressed by the "bold, masculine style" of the dishes prepared by chef Joey Elenterio, especially the fried oysters which he calls "spectacular." Ultimately, Bauer concludes that the restaurant has authentic appeal beyond Tyler Florence's fame: "His celebrity may bring diners in the door, but the staff and the food keep them coming back."
