As promised, stoner-favorite burger chain White Castle will soon feature a veggie slider as a permanent menu item — but in a holiday gift to fans, it'll arrive a bit earlier than expected. Grub Street reports the vegetarian-friendly burger will hit menus tomorrow, December 30, and each veggie slider will come with a choice of three sauces: honey mustard, ranch, and "sweet Thai." (A limited-market test run earlier this summer gave diners just one choice of sauce, an "avocado ranch.") Earlier this year, a spokesperson for the Columbus, Ohio-based chain told Columbus Business First that customer feedback was "being incorporated" into the final menu item, with an email survey asking fans their thoughts on sauces like "chipotle lime ketchup" and harissa.
According to previous reports, White Castle used the Dr. Praeger's brand of veggie patties in its test run, although it's unclear if Dr. Praeger's is in the product receiving nationwide rollout tomorrow.
Of course, White Castle isn't the only brand extending an olive branch to vegetarian and vegan diners. Chipotle Mexican Grill has been steadily expanding its vegan "Sofritas" menu nationwide. Vegan chain Native Foods Cafe has announced nationwide expansion goals. And in New York City, Del Posto pastry chef Brooks Headley has been drawing long lines (and one 2014 Eater Award) for his veggie burger pop-up, Superiority Burger: Eater NY called his version, served with a side of Old Bay potatoes, "satisfyingly unhealthy-tasting." The same could probably be said of a sack of White Castle veggie sliders, give or take some of the "satisfying."
