This morning, Canadian coffee chain — and Burger King's new buddyTim Hortons announced that it was beefing up its breakfast and lunch menu offerings. According to a release, Tim Hortons is bringing back its once-popular Steak & Cheese Panini. For a limited time, breakfast also gets the steak treatment with a new Grilled Steak & Egg Breakfast Sandwich.

This is the first major menu addition Tim Hortons has made since it was acquired by Burger King in August. And in a reach move perhaps meant to attract a newly food-obsessed public, the brand is partnering with Canadian Beef to source the steaks locally. "Canada's 68,000 beef cattle farmers and ranchers appreciate Tim Hortons' commitment to offer top quality sandwiches featuring 100 per cent Canadian beef," said Rob Meijer, President of Canada Beef, in a release.

Tim Hortons' meaty menu addition mirrors efforts made by other coffee retailers — including Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts — to appeal to diners in the afternoon and evening hours. Indeed, a spokesperson confirms that Tim Hortons would like to "become Canada's lunch leader." Fortunately, its new parent company knows a thing or two about the lunch business.
