Hillary Dixler Canavan is Eater's restaurant editor and the author of the publication's debut book, Eater: 100 Essential Restaurant Recipes From the Authority on Where to Eat and Why It Matters (Abrams, September 2023). Her work focuses on dining trends and the people changing the industry — and scouting the next hot restaurant you need to try on Eater's annual Best New Restaurant list.

Sad news for hot dog fans in New York City: The Greenwich Village location of beloved hot dog stand Gray's Papaya appears to have closed, meaning there's only one place in all of New York to get their famous "Recession Specials" (two dogs and drink for $3.50). A tipster sends photos to Eater NY showing a construction crew taking down signage from the downtown hot dog stand, and describes a construction crew taking the restaurant apart piece by piece. An employee confirmed to Eater NY that the Greenwich Village location has indeed closed, but was unsure whether the closure was temporary or for good.

Still, it isn't a good sign for the hot dog company, whose original Upper West Side location is now the only active location in the city, the others having closed over the past few years. Have a cherished memory from the Greenwich Village Gray's Papaya? Tell Eater NY about it.
